so many unanswered whys

"Do you remember that night in Lake Tahoe?" he asked. "that was the night I stopped believing in building walls."


For a second she just looked at him, startled..when she spoke, it was softly, "you don't owe me anything."


"Ah, but you see that's where you're wrong, I owe you the world." he said, looking at her intently, "because I was wrong, wrong about so many things."


Laughing a little she replied, "and here I thought you were never wrong."


"Oh I'm wrong quite often, it's how I get to right."


Her smile grew a little sad and for a moment she didn't speak..


"There was a time I would have given you my heart, shadows and all," she whispered, eyes downcast, her hair shielding her expression from him, "a time I trusted you when I didn't dare to trust myself. You are the most intriguing and infuriating man I've ever known..I think I've loved you for as long as I've understood what that word means."
